Another shocking instance of blasphemous behavior was recorded in Greece this week, coming on the heels of a recent systematic spree of vandalism against Orthodox places of worship by small but particularly militant groups of self-styled anarchists, political extremists and nihilists.

On Tuesday a motorcyclist transporting a framed painting of the Panaghia, the Virgin Mary, and a Cross, was stopped in central Athens by a group of people demonstrating for a convicted serial killer, urban terrorist and armed bank robber. As shown on video, the group of mostly young adults, some wearing face masks and others not, tore up the image of the Blessed Virgin Mary and broke the Cross on the pavement.

While doing so, the street mob chanted slogans against the institution of the family, the homeland and religion.

A particularly vocal but marginal minority of people in Greek society have recently taken to the streets to demonstrate, often violently, in favor of the notorious “November 17” terrorist’s demand to be transferred to a prison of his choice, with the latter’s attorneys and supporters claiming that this is foreseen in a 2019 law on inmate transfers conducted from prison farms.

However, the prison that the serial killer wants to return to is now designated as a pre-trial lockup, not a penitentiary, whereas remaining inmates at the facility (Korydallos) in the greater Athens area are steadily being transferred from there; none are returned.

The distressing incident was captured on video and aired, among others, by the Orthodoxia Νews Αgency, sparking an outcry on social media.

While Greece and the Greek diaspora are gearing up for celebrations this year to mark the bicentennial of the commencement of the Greek Revolution in 1821, members of this extremist movement, similar to “antifa” in other western states, have chanted “Greece must die so we have live; Religion must die”.

A fraction of these disturbed young people have gone further, vandalizing chapels and monuments for the heroes and heroines of the war of liberation from dour Ottoman rule.
