Short film showcases eponymous St. Emilian rock outcrop, in NW Symi – (VIDEO)

Looking at a map, the tiny rock outcrop of St. Emilian – Aghios Emilianos, in Greek – lies just off a promontory on the northwest coast of small, picturesque Symi isle, itself in the far eastern Aegean. Symi lies due north of large and well-known Rhodes, and only a few kilometers from two slender peninsulas jutting out from the Asia Minor mainland.

St. Emilian is connected with the rest of the island’s mainland by a sliver of land, and although there are no sandy beaches, the waters around the outcrop are stunningly turquoise.

It’s this speck of land, which hosts the same-name chapel of St. Emilian, that is the subject of a short film by journalist Aristidis Miaoulis, entitled “The Secrets of St. Emilian of Symi”, the result of years of research.

The film will debut on Monday evening on Symi.

According to tradition, the chapel was built from the donation of sponge divers, and after the saint appeared to a boat owner in a dream, requesting the construction.

The film, in Greek, recounts the history of the outcrop, from antiquity until today, replete with the oral history as retold by local residents and with an emphasis to their faith in the protection offered by St. Emilian.

Additionally, images from the celebratory Divine Liturgy, held on the saint’s annual Feast Day, and presided by the Metropolitan of Symi, Tilos, Halki and Kastellorizo, His Eminence Chrysostomos II, are shown, along with rare photographs of the spectacular scenery.
