Southern-most Orthodox Church on Antarctica

The Russian Orthodox cathedral of the Holy Trinity is the southern-most Orthodox house of worship in the world, as it is located in Antarctica.

The church is a 15-meter-high wooden structure built in traditional Russian ecclesiastical style. It can accommodate up to 30 worshippers. The structure was first built in Russia from Siberian Pine, then dismantled and shipped by a supply vessel to King George Island. It was assembled on high ground near the seashore by the staff of Bellingshausen research station.

One of the duties of clerics and hieromonks assigned to the chapel is to pray for the souls of 64 Russian who, over the decades, have lost their lives during missions in Antarctica, as well as holding Church services for personnel serving in research stations in the wider area.
