On Sunday, May 24, Sunday of the Blind Man, His Grace Bishop Emilianos of Meloa attended St Catherine Greek Orthodox Church Mascot, Sydney, Australia.

In His sermon addressing the faithful via the internet, His Grace Bishop Emilianos analysed the gospel passage of the day and noted the valuable lessons from it.

His Grace Bishop Emilianos noted that the Pharisees, although they believed in the coming of the Messiah and were looking forward to the coming, while constantly reading the Bible and knowing all the prophecies, nevertheless when He came, “they remained closed to the ideologies. They lost their salvation and crucified their Saviour.”

His Grace also focused on the point where Christ addressed the blind man with the question: “Do you believe in the Son of God?”, noting that he did not tell him if he believed in the Son of Man, as he usually called himself, but “the Son of God.” And, in fact, when the blind man asked “and what are you, Lord, to believe in him?”, Christ answered: “καὶ ἑώρακας αὐτὸν καὶ ὁ λαλῶν μετὰ σοῦ ἐκεῖνός ἐστιν” and that is “and you saw him and he is the one who is now talking to you.”

Summarising the above, His Grace Bishop Emilianos discerned that Christ was clearly revealed to the blind man, without parables or in any other indirect way, and finally urged the faithful “to pray, first, that God may show us our blindness and our mistakes. Then, let us ask for the strength to endure this revelation of our blindness and, finally, to ask for our spiritual light and the revelation of God in our lives.”
