The Feast day of Panagia Portaitissa at the Holy Monastery of Iviron

Within the cheerful atmosphere of the Resurrection of Christ and in accordance with the order and tradition of Mount Athos, on April 18, Tuesday of Bright Week, the miraculous finding of the Miraculous Icon of Panagia Portaitissa was celebrated, in the Holy Patriarchal and Stavropegic Monastery of Iviron on Mount Athos, which was officiated by, with Patriarchal Canonical permission, His Eminence Metropolitan Chrysostomos of Symi, Tilos, Halkis and Kastellorizos, who was kindly invited by the Holy Monastery.

In the early hours of the morning, the Service of the Festive Matins and the Sanctification of the water took place in the Katholikon Church of the Holy Monastery, and then the Holy Litany of the Miraculous Icon of the Panagia took place, accompanied by the pilgrims to the buildings and chapels of the Monastery, which ended in the Kathisma of the Monastery, the Katholikon Church of which, is the only Church where the Divine Liturgy is celebrated, outside of the Monastery, with the presence of the blessed icon of the Virgin Mary.

During the Divine Liturgy, Metropolitan Chrysostomos of Symi was joined by His Eminence Metropolitan Ioustinos of Nea Krini and Kalamaria, His Grace Bishop Ioannis of Palmyra from the Patriarchate of Antioch, the Abbot of the Holy Patriarchal and Stavropegic Monastery of Iviron, Archimandrite Nathanael, as well as Hieromonks and Deacons from Monasteries of the Athonite peninsula.

Afterwards, the Holy Icon was transferred to the Sanctuary, which is located near the Kathisma, where, according to tradition, it was originally placed by the holy Monk Gabriel, when he took it out of the sea in the year 1004, and the antidoron was then distributed to the faithful.
