The feast of Saint Catherine the Great-Martyr at the Patriarchate

On Monday, the 25th of November/8th of December 2025, the Patriarchate solemnly celebrated the commemoration of Saint Catherine the all-wise Great-Martyr at her holy Monastery, situated but a stone’s throw to the north of the Patriarchate.

The Church, in the Synaxarion, hands down concerning Saint Catherine the all-wise, that she was born in Alexandria, the daughter of the nobleman Constus. She was a maiden of surpassing beauty, most prudent, and illustrious in wealth, lineage, and education. By the steadfastness of her mind, she overcame the impassioned soul of Maximinus, the tyrant of Alexandria, and by her eloquence, she confounded the rhetoricians who disputed with her. For this cause, she was surnamed “all-wise”. She bore witness for Christ, her Bridegroom, about the year 305.

In her honour, Vespers and the Divine Liturgy were celebrated in the Monastery above, presided over by His Eminence Metropolitan Hesychios of Capitolias, with co-celebrants the Archimandrites Philoumenos and Claudius, Priest Nektarios, and Hierodeacon Eulogios, with Mr Angelos, the Byzantine chanter, chanting in the prayerful presence of monks, nuns, Jerusalemite faithful, and pilgrims.

Following the Divine Liturgy, the diligent Hegumen of the Monastery, Archimandrite Stephanos, offered refreshments to the Episcopal Entourage and the congregation.

The memory of Saint Catherine was also celebrated festively at the Holy Monastery of Mount Sinai, founded in her name by the Emperor Justinian, wherein her sacred relic is preserved.

A delegation of the Patriarchate of Jerusalem participated in this feast, consisting of His Eminence Metropolitan Joachim of Helenoupolis, Archimandrite Christodoulos, and Hierodeacon Prodromos, together with Archimandrite Alexios and Deacon Eustathios. They concelebrated with the newly elected Archbishop Symeon of Sinai, together with His Eminence Metropolitan Nikolaos of Hermoupolis of the Patriarchate of Alexandria.
