The feast of Saint Porphyrios, Bishop of Gaza, at the Patriarchate
On the Second Sunday of the Fast, 23 February / 8 March 2026, the Patriarchate celebrated, by transfer, the feast of Saint Porphyrios, Bishop of Gaza, at the Holy Monastery dedicated to his name in Gaza.
On this day, the Church commemorates the missionary work accomplished in Gaza by Saint Porphyrios (347–420), who came from Thessaloniki and was ordained Bishop by Prailios, Bishop of Jerusalem. Through his labours, he delivered the decisive blow against the paganism that prevailed there and established Christianity, which flourished and shone forth for centuries until the present day.
By divine power, the Monastery survived the severe trial of the recent three-year war and served as a refuge of salvation for the three hundred Orthodox Christians and non-Christians who fled to it, offering them shelter, food, and meeting all their other needs.
The Divine Liturgy was presided over by His Eminence Archbishop Alexios of Tiberias, who, by the prayers and blessings of His Beatitude our Father and Patriarch of Jerusalem, Theophilos III, has been the soul of this humanitarian work, together with his assistant Archimandrite Silas, and with the prayerful participation of the Christians who were saved.
