The Feast of the miracle of the boiled wheat of Saint Theodore the Tyro

On the Saturday of the First Week of the Fast, 15/28 February 2026, the Patriarchate celebrated the feast of the miracle of the boiled wheat (kollyva) of the holy Great Martyr Theodore the Tyro.

On this feast the Church commemorates the miracle of the kollyva, namely that Saint Theodore the Tyro appeared in a dream to Eudoxios, Archbishop of Constantinople, instructing him to warn the Christians of Constantinople not to eat the defiled idol-offerings from the marketplace, which had been introduced by the Emperor Julian the Apostate, also known as the persecutor of Christians, but instead to eat “kollyva”, that is, boiled wheat, as was the custom in his homeland of Euchaita.

In remembrance of this miracle, Vespers was celebrated on the eve, together with the First Stasis of the Salutations, and the Divine Liturgy on the following morning at the Holy Monastery of the Saints Theodore in the Old City of Jerusalem. The services were presided over by His Eminence Metropolitan Hesychios of Capitolias, with the Holy Sepulchre Archimandrites Philoumenos, Stephanos, and Amphilochios, Priest Nektarios, and Archdeacon Mark. The chanting was delivered by Hierodeacon Prodromos and the nuns Maria and Sebastiani. Also participating were members of the sisterhood, Jerusalemite faithful, with the honourable presence of members of the Greek Consulate General, and a few pilgrims, owing to the adverse circumstances of the war which has just begun.

During the Divine Liturgy, His Beatitude, our Father and Patriarch of Jerusalem, Theophilos III, visited the Holy Monastery for veneration, accompanied by Fathers of the Holy Sepulchre.

The Patriarchal and Episcopal entourages, together with the congregation, were courteously received by the diligent Hegumen of the Monastery and rite-keeper of the Patriarchal Church of Saints Constantine and Helen, Archimandrite Alexios.
