The Holy Synod of the Serbian Orthodox Church this week expressed its concern over the situation of the Church in Montenegro.

A recent draft bill approved by the government, in the small country located on the east Adriatic coast, could lead to an appropriation of churches and parishes belonging to the Serbian Orthodox Church.

The draft bill, passed by the Cabinet, ostensibly deals with freedom of religion and the legal status of religious bodies in the country. It comes up for a vote in Montenegro’s parliament in July.

Nevertheless, an announcement by the Serbian Church’s Holy Synod charges that the Church faces animosity and discrimination in all the countries that emerged after the break-up of the former Yugoslavia, especially in Montenegro.
