The Icon of the Mother of God of the Akathist Hymn from Mount Athos to Imbros
On 1 August 2026, the island of Imbros will receive the sacred Icon of the Mother of God of the Akathist Hymn from Mount Athos. During the night of 7–8 August, marking the 1,400th anniversary of the chanting of the Akathist Hymn in the Church of the Theotokos at Blachernae in the Queen of Cities (Constantinople), a solemn All-Night Vigil will be celebrated at the Metropolitan Church of the Panagia, during which the Akathist Hymn will be chanted.
The official announcement of the Holy Metropolis of Imbros and Tenedos follows:
It is announced to the pious Christians of our Holy Metropolis that, as part of the celebrations commemorating the 1,400th anniversary of the chanting of the Akathist Hymn in the Holy Church of the Theotokos at Blachernae in the Queen of Cities, the wonderworking Icon of the Mother of God of the Akathist (a faithful copy) will be brought from Mount Athos to our island.
This sacred Icon is a blessing bestowed by the Holy Monastery of Saint Dionysios on Mount Athos upon our Holy Metropolis, for the protection and sanctification of these islands and of our faithful.
The arrival and official reception of the Holy Icon will take place on Saturday, 1 August 2026, at 7:00 p.m., at the Holy Metropolitan Church of the Panagia, after which the service of Great Vespers will be celebrated.
Each morning at 8:30 am, the services of Matins and the Divine Liturgy will be celebrated.
Each evening at 7:00 pm, Vespers and the Supplicatory Canon (Paraklesis) to the Theotokos will be served.
At 10:00 pm each night, the service of the Small Compline and the Salutations to the Theotokos will be read.
During the night of 7 August, continuing into the early hours of 8 August, the principal day of the anniversary celebration, an All-Night Vigil will be celebrated, and the Akathist Hymn will be chanted.
The Holy Icon will thereafter remain permanently in the Holy Metropolitan Church of the Panagia within our Holy Metropolis as a precious sacred treasure for the veneration of the faithful.
