The Rite of the Holy and Great Resurrection at the Patriarchate of Jerusalem
On the night of Holy Saturday, 30 March / 12 April 2026 (according to the Old and New Calendars respectively), the joyous feast of the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ was celebrated in the All-Holy Church of the Resurrection.
At midnight, the presiding celebrant, His Beatitude our Father and Patriarch of Jerusalem, Theophilos III of Jerusalem, descended into the All-Holy Edicule of the Holy Sepulchre, there to perform the sacred service of the Resurrection.
Within the Katholikon, the Resurrection Canon, “The wave of the sea,” was chanted, in the presence of His Beatitude the Patriarch, with concelebrating hierarchs and priests.
Thereafter, a procession was made three times around the All-Holy and Life-giving Tomb.
Following the procession, the Holy Gospel of the Resurrection was proclaimed from the Gospel of Mark (16:1–8): “When the Sabbath was past…”.
Then all cried aloud: “Glory to the Holy, Consubstantial, and Undivided Trinity,” and from within the Holy Sepulchre itself, His Beatitude the Patriarch chanted “Christ is risen from the dead,” together with its verses, as prescribed by the Typikon, with the concelebration of the hierarchs and priests.
Thereupon began the service of the Resurrection Orthros, with the Canon of John of Damascus. At the ninth ode, His Beatitude the Patriarch, the hierarchs, and the Consul General of Greece venerated the All-Holy Tomb.
After the completion of Orthros, the Divine Liturgy of John Chrysostom was celebrated. During it, “Christ is risen from the dead” was chanted in many languages, in the joy and exultation of the faithful. Before the dismissal, the Catechetical Homily of Saint John Chrysostom—“If any be devout and a lover of God…”—was read.
After the dismissal, the Patriarchal entourage, led by His Beatitude the Patriarch, ascended to the Central Monastery, where the customary Paschal gathering took place, with red eggs and other festive foods.
