His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew received at midday on Thursday, 25 June, the Deputy Minister of Development of Greece, Mr Stavros Kalafatis, responsible for Research and Innovation, together with the President of the National Centre for Research and Technological Development (CERTH), Dr Evangelos Bekiaris, and their associates. Also present were His Grace Bishop Nikiforos of Amorion, Abbot of the Patriarchal and Stavropegic Monastery of Vlatadon in Thessaloniki and President of the Patriarchal Foundation for Patristic Studies, and Archon Hypomimneskon Mr Symeon Paschalidis, Professor at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and Director of the Patriarchal Foundation.

During the meeting, which took place in a cordial atmosphere, His All-Holiness was presented with the initiative to establish the Research Institute of “Ethics, Theology and Philosophy in Science and Technology” (ΙΘΟΣ). The Institute will operate as a research institute of CERTH (Centre for Research & Technology Hellas) and will be based at the Patriarchal Foundation for Patristic Studies in Thessaloniki.

ΙΘΟΣ will function as an international centre for research and dialogue, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration among theologians, philosophers, scientists, engineers, and technology specialists on contemporary issues relating to artificial intelligence, bioethics, digital governance, human identity, and the ethical challenges posed by scientific progress.

His All-Holiness blessed the establishment of the Institute and its operation within the facilities of the Patriarchal Foundation for Patristic Studies, emphasising the importance of developing a fruitful and sustained dialogue between Orthodox theology and tradition, on the one hand, and contemporary science and new technologies, on the other, at a time when the development and applications of artificial intelligence occupy a central place in public discourse.
