Egypt’s antiquities ministry has overseen the completion of infrastructure upgrades around the Holy Monastery of St. Catherine of Mt. Sinai. The works had been announced by South Sinai governor Maj. Gen. Khaled Fouda, during a special event held in his honor last December at the Greek Cultural Centre in Cairo.

Works included the paving of roads leading to the Monastery and Mt. Sinai – which is also known as Mount Horeb and the Mountain of Moses – as well as parking for tourist coaches, upgrading services in bazaar area, washrooms and a clinic, as well as installing a new electronic security system.

The improvements aim to allow for an increase in the number of visitors and pilgrims to the Monastery, which hosts the relics of St. Catherine of Alexandria, and a famous mosaic of the Transfiguration.
