Another handful of wildfires erupted in the early morning hours around the country after midnight on Tuesday, with the most ominous blaze in north-central part of Evia island, which off eastern mainland Greece.

The fire was burning near the village of Makrymalli, with smoke seen from scores of kilometers away, even in the skies over the greater Athens area.

The blaze was centered in a Natura-protected pine forest amid gusty northerly winds.

The wildfire was burning close to the Monastery of Panaghia Makrymalli, which was evacuated.
