The Church today venerates the memory of Cosmas and Damian, the Holy Un-mercenaries of Asia, and their mother Theodota. Born in southeast Asia Minor in the third century AD, they became well-known physicians, healing illnesses and maladies without requesting payment. Because of this, they are called “Unmercenaries”, or “silver-less”.
