Attention turns to Moldovan border in latest twist in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine
The Ukrainian military on Friday said it was moving more troops to the country’s southwest border, near a Moscow-backed breakaway region in neighboring Moldova, known as Transnistria.
Russian strikes on a bridge near the Ukrainian port city of Odessa have fed concerns that the Kremlin is looking to establish a pretext to use Transnistria as a springboard for attacks in Ukraine’s south.
EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell on Friday called for all sides to avoid destabilization, in the aftermath of explosions in Transnistria.
In an official statement, Borrell said that “…the European Union calls on the responsible actors to avoid the destabilization of the situation.
He also welcomed what he called “restrained reactions” of the Moldovan government and reiterated the bloc’s support for the country’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
The European Union has launched a procedure to examine the applications of Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova for membership in record time.
However, EU unity will be tested as the war’s economic effects intensify. With inflation on the rise and food and fuel supplies under pressure, there is growing awareness of the risks facing Europe.
