The Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, His All Holiness Bartholomew I, is in Poland on Wednesday to participate in the 31st annual “March of the Living”, at the site of the Auschwitz concentration camp, along with up to 20,000 other marchers.

The event commemorates the millions of victims, including six million Jews, exterminated in the Nazi death camps during WWII.

Bartholomew will lead this year’s procession, covering the distance from the train depot, where arrivals disembarked, to the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp, some three kilometers away.

Afterwards, the Ecumenical Patriarch will be the keynote speaker an official event, which this year is devoted to the memory of Greek citizens that perished in the Holocaust.

On Friday, His All Holiness will visit Warsaw, where he will be received by the Orthodox Archbishop of Warsaw and Metropolitan of All Poland, His Beatitude Eminence Sawa.
