For the first time in 31 years, the Louvre has acquired an icon
It is a 17th century icon of St. Phanourios.
This Cretan icon by Silvestros Desos is based on a 15th work by the great Cretan iconographer Angelos Akotantos, also known for being the first to sign his icons. The icon acquired by the Louvre must be restored.
Saint Phanourios, celebrated on August 27, is the patron of lost objects. Also, a cake is baked in his honor, the fanouropita.

Il s’agit d’une variation sur une icône (ruinée) d’ #Angelos Akotantos (XVe s.) conservée au monastère de #Valsamonerou à 50 km au sud-ouest d’ #Heraklion, où le culte de saint #Phanourios a cristallisé au début du XVe siècle pic.twitter.com/q3QBzPy0s8
