Amid devastation religious relics saved from Notre Dame fire
A massive blaze that swept through Notre Dame Cathedral on Monday afternoon has been deemed an “accident” — and is now fully extinguished, French officials said Tuesday.
A team of 50 investigators is now working to pinpoint the cause of the fire, which destroyed parts of the iconic 12th-century structure.
The fire burned for several hours after breaking out on the wooden roof, which was constructed from giant oak beams, including some dating back to the 13th century.
The mayor of Paris thanked firefighters for a human chain that rescued significant relics from the blaze, while a man dubbed as a hero priest made a daring dash into the burning cathedral to save the Crown of Thorns, a religious relic whose arrival at the cathedral dates to the 13th century.
Emergency crews and many parishioners risked their lives to transport as many religious objects from the cathedral as possible.
Another very significant relic that was rescued is a piece of the True Cross and a nail from the Crucifixion.
