Archbishop Ieronymos refers to a ‘compromise’ with PM over worship during upcoming Holy Easter Week
The Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, His Beatitude Ieronymos, spoke with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Monday evening on the sidelines of a commemorative event in Parliament, amid the standing demand by the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Greece that cathedrals and chapels be open to worshippers during the coming Holy Easter Week.
In a later statement, His Beatitude said “we do not believe that we will have the opportunity to travel to our villages for Easter … we found a solution, to proceed with a compromise, so as not to cause commotion.”
The Primate of the Church of Greece and the country’s prime minister briefly spoke on the sidelines of a commemorated event marking the bicentennial of the beginning of the Greek War of Independence in 1821.
In brief statements to reporters afterwards, Archbishop Ieronymos said the Holy and Great Easter Friday Epithatios procession – the reverent liturgy whereby the embroidered and richly adorned shroud bearing an image of the life-less and Un-nailed Body of Christ is carried around a cathedral, followed by the clerics and the faithful – will be conducted around the cathedrals themselves.
“The issue is not only that we want to travel (to the provinces) and they are not letting us; island residents are also worried about the greater possible transfer of the coronavirus. Let us be patient, I believe May will be better,” His Beatitude added.
