Austrian Embassy congratulates Romania on National Cathedral mosaic consecration, highlights Austrian-made bells and chandeliers

The Austrian Embassy in Bucharest has sent a message of congratulations to the Romanian people on the occasion of the consecration of the mosaic iconography of the National Cathedral, also highlighting the contribution of Austrian companies that produced the monumental bells and chandeliers of the world’s largest Orthodox church.

In a message posted on its official Facebook page, the Embassy mentioned the involvement of Glockengießerei Grassmayr and Orion – Leuchten mit Stil in the interior works of the National Cathedral.

“We are especially pleased that the Austrian companies Glockengießerei Grassmayr and Orion – Leuchten mit Stil have made a significant contribution to the completion of the largest Orthodox church in the world, both through the delivery of the bells — including the world’s largest freely swinging bell — and through the creation of five monumental chandeliers,” the Embassy noted.

The Bells of the National Cathedral

The National Cathedral houses six bells, five of which weigh 3,450 kg, 1,700 kg, 1,000 kg, 750 kg, and 450 k,g respectively.

They are tuned as follows: C♯ (octave 0) – the great bell, C♯, E♯, G♯, A♯ (octave 1), and C♯ (octave 2).

In addition, a large bell weighing approximately 25 tons, with a height and diameter of about three meters, has been installed.

This is an extraordinary achievement, as it is one of the largest freely swinging bells in Europe.

The cost of all six bells for the National Cathedral was covered entirely by the Romanian Patriarchate’s own funds.
