Cypriot MEP Mavrides refers to cultural genocide taking place in Turkish-occupied Cyprus
Cypriot MEP Costas Mavrides, speaking this week to the Orthodoxia news agency ahead of the EU Summit meeting, referred to the Union’s relations with increasingly belligerent Turkey, as well as the continued vandalism and desecration against Orthodox places of worship and cultural sites in occupied Cyprus.
Mavrides reminded that “hundreds” of Greek Orthodox churches, monasteries and Christian sites and monuments have been looted and destroyed in the Turkish-occupied areas of the island republic.
“This is a crime against civilization, one that is continuing unpunished on EU territory,” he said.
