Memorial service on Mount Athos for Elder Joseph of Vatopedi

A memorial service was held on Tuesday evening at the Holy and Great Monastery of Vatopedi, on Mount Athos, on the occasion of the 11-year anniversary of the repose of the Elder Joseph of Vatopedi.
The service was officiated by the Abbot of the Holy Monastery of the Osios Gregorios, Elder Archimandrite Christoforos.

The Elder Joseph reposed on July 1, 2009, on his birth date

Joseph of Vatopedi was a disciple of the Elder Joseph the Hesychast, who was canonized last year by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople.

At this time of his repose, he was regarded as one of the few remaining true Athonite elders.

The Elder Joseph was born in 1921 and arrived on the semi-autonomous monastic community of Mount Athos in 1946 from Cyprus, where he joined Elder Joseph the Hesychast at the Skete of St. Anne.

Elder Joseph of Vatopedi remained at the skete after the repose of Joseph the Hesychast in 1959 – and until 1987. After Easter in 1987, he moved to the Holy and Great Monastery of Vatopedi where he remained until his repose in the Lord.
