The Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate this week unanimously elected the Metropolitan of Dardanelles, His Eminence Nikitas, as the new Archbishop of Thyateira and Great Britain, succeeding Archbishop Gregorios, who announced his retirement last month.

According to the Patriarchate’s website, Nikitas was born in 1955 in Tampa, Florida where he was raised with his brother John.

A member of the University of Florida’s Honor Society, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1976.

His Eminence attended the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology and received his Master of Divinity, with Honors, in 1980.

He pursued his graduate studies at the University of Thessaloniki until November 1982.

His Eminence Nikitas’ first assignment upon ordination was as an associate pastor at the Ss Constantine and Helen Cathedral in Merriville, Indiana.

In March 2007, His Eminence Nikitas was appointed as the director of the Patriarch Athenagoras Orthodox Insitute in Berkeley, California.
