New Greek gov’t considering a suspension to ‘last-minute’ revisions in penal code made by previous administration

The new center-right Greek government that arose from the July 7 election is reportedly considering the possibility of suspending the implementation of numerous revisions to the country’s penal code, which were passed by a slim Parliament majority days before the plenum was dissolved ahead of the election.

The revisions were proposed, tabled in Parliament and subsequently ratified by deputies supporting the previous Tsipras government, with a number of felony offenses downgraded to misdemeanors. Other long-standing statutes, such as insult to religion and the deceased, were also abolished, generated sharp reactions by the Church of Greece.

According to reports, the new leadership at the justice ministry is eyeing legislation to reverse most of the revisions taken by the previous government, with a timetable for a vote in September.
