Mountain rescuers from Bușteni received on Sunday the Diploma and Medal marking the Centennial of the Romanian Patriarchate. The event took place at Caraiman Monastery, following the Divine Liturgy.

Archimandrite David Petrovici, abbot of Caraiman Monastery, presented the diplomas to the rescuers and conveyed the blessing and congratulations of His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel for their efforts in serving citizens and tourists in difficulty on the mountain trails of the Bucegi Massif.

The distinctions were awarded by the Patriarch of Romania as a sign of appreciation for their constant effort, dedication and sense of responsibility in their mission to rescue tourists in high-risk situations in the Bucegi Mountains.

“We thank you for your devotion, for your sleepless nights, for your difficult interventions, and for the balance you maintain between man and mountain. You are an example of civic responsibility, especially for young people, showing that true nobility lies in service, and true strength in sacrifice,” Archimandrite David Petrovici said.

Proof of sacrificial love
The event was also attended by Protosyncellus Diodor Șchiopu, superior of the Saint Anne Hermitage at Cota 1,400, who underlined that many rescue actions carried out by mountain rescuers remain unknown, as their help is offered discreetly and appreciated only by a small number of people.

“But here we see that the Church, through Patriarch Daniel, does not forget the good that has been done, but offers blessing, joy, hope and appreciation to these steadfast doers of good in difficult situations.”

“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends (Matthew 15:12–13). Placing these verses in the context of the mountain rescuers’ mission, we can say that their daily work is love for people, since the help they offer fulfils the Christian commandment and proves a sacrificial love, expressed in doing good, sometimes at heightened risk,” Father Diodor Șchiopu said.

More than 8,000 people were rescued from the mountains last year—around 450 more than in 2024—following nationwide interventions by Salvamont Romania, Agerpres reported.
