A celebratory Divine Liturgy and veneration of the miracle-working Panaghia Faneromeni icon was held on Friday at the same-name Cathedral in the Nea Michaniona municipality, east of Thessaloniki, on the occasion of the Afterfeast of the Dormition of the Theotokos, the Ever Virgin Mary — nine days after the Great Feast of the Dormition.

Thousands of worshippers venerated and placed their votive offerings at the Holy Icon of the Panaghia Faneromeni, which accompanied the wave of ethnic Greeks that left their ancestral lands in 1922-23 on the shores of Asia Minor for a new life in the modern Greek state.

The Metropolitan of Kassandria, His Grace Nikodimos, co-presided at a concelebration Divine Liturgy with another five Metropolitans of northern Greece.

The particular Afterfeast for the Cathedral in Nea Michaniona, the home of a large fleet of commercial fishing vessels, is a major religious celebration intrinsically linked with the Greek communities uprooted from Asia Minor.
