Today, Feb. 7, marks the 14th anniversary of the election of His Beatitude Archbishop Ieronymos II to the Throne of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Greece.
Ieronymos, born Ioannis Liapis, was elected as the new Archbishop by members of the Church of Greece’s Holy Synod, elevated from Metropolitan of Thebes and Livadia.

Over the course of the past 14 years Archbishop Ieronymos has faced several crucial issues, while remaining true to the goal of always providing support to his fellow man in need, and for the unity of the synodal charter and operation of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Greece.

Among others, Archbishop Ieronymos has shepherded the Church of Greece through the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, and the unprecedented restrictions that it has wrought, such as the mandatory closing of places of worship for the faithful during certain painful periods.

On Monday morning, a Divine Liturgy was celebrated at the Archdiocese’s chapel of St. Andrew, in the center of the Greek capital, officiated by the Protosyngellos, or First Secretary, of the Archdiocese of Athens, Archimandrite Barnabas Theocharis, on the occasion of the anniversary of the Archbishop’s election.
