Athens remains steadfast in gaining int’l recognition of Pontian Greek Genocide

The relevant Macedonia and Thrace Minister, Stavros Kalafatis, this week emphasized that the Greek government continues to work tirelessly and explicitly for the international recognition of the Pontian Genocide.
The minister referred to a historical debt to keep the memory of this tragic event alive, speaking during his attendance at a memorial service on the 102nd anniversary of the Pontian Genocide in Pontus, held in the Pavlos Melas Municipality of northern Greece.
Commemorations and memorial events commenced this week ahead of the annual May 19 remembrance of the Pontian Greek Genocide.

Ethnic Greek Pontian groups around the world on the specific day remember the more than 350,000 victims of the genocide, between 1916 and 1923, at the hands of the Ottoman authorities and Turkish nationalists in Pontus, the ancient land on the southeastern shores of the Black Sea and the inland mountains.

Greece’s Parliament has already recognized the Pontian Genocide, with the goal now being international recognition of the calamity.
