EDITOR’S NOTE (Nick Stamatakis): Metropolitan of Mesogaias Nikolaos has more medical and scientific credentials than most of the doctors we are seeing daily on TV, and at the same time he happens to be one of the greatest Orthodox leaders of our time. This speech was originally published in July 2010 as a response to the swine flu pandemic, when the issue of administering the Holy Communion was again brought to the front and center – and I have to note here that the swine flu was not as mild as the current coronavirus. It was very infectious…  We re-publish it here in both English and Greek, hoping to elucidate the discussion and to enlighten the decisions of our church leaders.  History of Orthodoxy teaches us that Faith also suffers occasionally from viruses and the most dangerous one is “doubt”. My Dear Brothers,

Recently, on the occasion of the outbreak of swine flu pandemic, the issue of the possibility of transmitting diseases through the Holy Communion was raised, as it should not be.

Unfortunately, often with disrespectful tongue, ironic style and unsubstantiated arguments, one more attempt was made to deconstruct our faith at a time when we have no other support left to hold on to. So on this occasion, I think it would be good to tell some truths, necessary in order to save the precious treasure of faith within us.

For two thousand years, our Church has been transmitting the grace of her mysteries in the well-known so human and at the same time blessed way to “heal and heal the soul and body.”

The Church never bothered with the modern logic of ungodly doubting, but she lives every day the experience of confirming a great miracle. Is it possible for the Holy Communion to cause sickness or the slightest damage?

Is it possible for the Body and Blood of our Lord and God to contaminate our body and blood? Is it possible for a daily experience of two thousand years to be shattered by the rationality and cold shallowness of our time?

For centuries, the faithful, the healthy and the sick, have been receiving the same holy chalice and the same holy spoon, which we never wash, which we never disinfect, and nothing has ever been observed.

The priests of the nursing homes and hospitals, even the ones for the most infectious diseases, give the holy communion to the faithful and reverently catalyze Holy Communion and live long lives.

Holy Communion is the holiest of the holy we have as a Church and as people, the greatest medicine of soul and body. This is both the teaching and experience of our Church.

Those who disbelieve in the miracle of the Resurrection of the Lord, those who ridicule His virgin birth, those who deny the fragrance of holy relics, those who despise our holy and sacred symbols, those who are blasphemous against our Church, those who seek to eradicate even the slightest trace of faith from our souls, it is natural for them to try to take advantage of the opportunity to insult the sacred sacrament of Holy Communion.

The fact that the Anglicans and Catholics have decided, for precautionary reasons, to stop the transmission of Holy Communion to England and New Zealand respectively, if true, does not, as some argue, show prudence and freedom, but demonstrates in the best way a huge distance from our Orthodox Church, which is Eucharistic in its theology and life, living, believing and preaching the Mystery… (Our Orthodox Faith) is different from the other Christian groups, which indirectly confess the absence of Grace and the signs of God from their so-called mysteries and so they descent into the loss of their ecclesiastical identity. Life without a “Holy Mystery” is like a serious illness without medicine.

Unfortunately, the big problem is not the flu virus – as the media claims – nor the global panic virus – as claimed by medical associations – but the virus of disrespectfulness and the germ of faithlessness.

The best vaccine is our frequent participation in the sacrament of Holy Communion “with pure conscience” and “without any doubts”. Our response to this unholy challenge is (the example of) our own life.

It would be good for our priests, using their judgment, where they see that there are no spiritual obstacles, to urge the faithful to receive Holy Communion more often these difficult days, those who do have their blessing to come often to the cup of life, but always “with fear of God, a lot of faith and sincere love “.

Η πανδημία της γρίπης και η θεία Κοινωνία, του Μητροπολίτη Μεσογαίας και Λαυρεωτικής κ. Νικολάου

Αγαπητοί μου αδελφοί,

Πρόσφατα, με αφορμή την ενσκήψασα πανδημία της γρίππης των χοίρων, ανεφύη, ως μη ώφειλε, και το θέμα του ενδεχομένου της μεταδόσεως ασθενειών μέσω της Θείας Κοινωνίας.

Δυστυχώς, συχνά με διάλεκτο ασεβή, ύφος ειρωνικό και επιχειρηματολογία όχι καλοπροαίρετη, έγινε ακόμη μια προσπάθεια αποδόμησης της πίστης μας σε μέρες που δεν μας έχει μείνει κανένα άλλο στήριγμα να κρατηθούμε.

Με την ευκαιρία λοιπόν αυτήν, θεωρώ πως καλό θα ήταν να πούμε κάποιες αλήθειες, αναγκαίες για να περισωθεί ο πολύτιμος θησαυρός της πίστης μέσα μας.

Η Εκκλησία μας δυό χιλιάδες χρόνια μεταδίδει τη χάρι των μυστηρίων της με τον γνωστό τόσο ανθρώπινο και ταυτόχρονα ευλογημένο τρόπο προς «ίασιν και θεραπείαν ψυχής και σώματος».

Ποτέ δεν προβληματίστηκε με τη σύγχρονη λογική της ασεβούς αμφισβήτησης, αλλά καθημερινά ζει με την εμπειρία της επιβεβαίωσης ενός μεγάλου θαύματος. Είναι δυνατόν η κοινωνία του Θεού να γίνει αιτία ασθένειας η παραμικρής βλάβης;

Είναι δυνατόν το Σώμα και το Αίμα του Κυρίου και Θεού μας να μολύνει το σώμα και το αίμα μας; Είναι δυνατόν καθημερινή εμπειρία δυό χιλιάδων χρόνων να συντριβεί από τον ορθολογισμό και την ψυχρή ρηχότητα της εποχής μας;

Από αιώνες μεταλαμβάνουν οι πιστοί, υγιείς και ασθενείς, από το ίδιο άγιο ποτήριο και από την ίδια αγία λαβίδα, που ποτέ δεν πλένουμε, που ποτέ δεν απολυμαίνουμε, και ποτέ δεν παρατηρήθηκε κάτι.
Οι ιερείς των νοσηλευτικών ιδρυμάτων, ακόμη και των λοιμωδών, μεταλαμβάνουν τους πιστούς και με ευλάβεια καταλύουν τη Θεία Κοινωνία και μακροζωούν.

Η Θεία Κοινωνία είναι ο,τι ιερώτερο ως Εκκλησία και άνθρωποι έχουμε, το μεγαλύτερο φάρμακο ψυχής και σώματος. Αυτό είναι και διδασκαλία και εμπειρία της Εκκλησίας μας.

Όσοι δυσπιστούν στο θαύμα της Αναστάσεως του Κυρίου, όσοι ειρωνεύονται την εκ παρθένου γέννησή Του, όσοι αρνούνται την ευωδία των αγίων λειψάνων, όσοι περιφρονούν τα ιερά και όσια, όσοι βυσσοδομούν κατά της Εκκλησίας μας, όσοι ζητούν να εξαφανίσουν και το ελάχιστο ίχνος πίστης από τις ψυχές μας φυσικό είναι να προσπαθούν να εκμεταλλευτούν την ευκαιρία να προσβάλουν και το ιερώτατο μυστήριο της Θείας Ευχαριστίας.

Το γεγονός ότι οι Αγγλικανοί και οι Καθολικοί αποφάσισαν, για προληπτικούς λόγους, τη διακοπή της μετάδοσης της θείας κοινωνίας στην Αγγλία και τη Νέα Ζηλανδία αντίστοιχα, αν αληθεύει, δεν φανερώνει, όπως μερικοί υποστηρίζουν, σύνεση και ελευθερία, αλλά καταδεικνύει με τον καλύτερο τρόπο την τεράστια απόσταση της Εκκλησίας μας, που είναι Eυχαριστιακή στη θεολογία και ζωή της, που ζει, πιστεύει και κηρύττει το Μυστήριο, από τις υπόλοιπες χριστιανικές ομάδες, που έμμεσα ομολογούν την απουσία της χάριτος και των σημείων του Θεού από τα λεγόμενα μυστήριά τους και την απώλεια της εκκλησιαστικής ταυτότητάς τους. Ζωή χωρίς Μυστήριο μοιάζει με σοβαρή ασθένεια χωρίς φάρμακο.

Δυστυχώς, το μεγάλο πρόβλημα δεν είναι ο ιός της γρίπης -όπως διατείνονται τα ΜΜΕ- ούτε ο ιός του παγκόσμιου πανικού -όπως υποστηρίζουν οι ιατρικοί σύλλογοι- αλλά ο ιός της ασεβείας και το μικρόβιο της ολιγοπιστίας.

Και το καλύτερο εμβόλιο είναι η «μετά καθαρού συνειδότος» και «ακατάκριτος» συχνή συμμετοχή μας στο μυστήριο της Θείας Κοινωνίας. Η απάντησή μας στην ανίερη αυτή πρόκληση των ημερών είναι η δική μας ζωή.

Καλό θα είναι οι πνευματικοί μας, μετά διακρίσεως, όπου κρίνουν ότι δεν υπάρχουν πνευματικά κωλύματα, να προτρέπουν τους πιστούς να μεταλαμβάνουν συχνότερα τούτες τις δύσκολες μέρες, όσοι δε έχουμε την ευλογία τους να προσερχόμαστε συχνά στο ποτήριο της ζωής, πάντοτε όμως «μετά φόβου Θεού, πολλής πίστεως και ειλικρινούς αγάπης».
